Health Benefits of CBD

Interested in CBD oil, the health benefits and what all the hype is all about? Here is how CBD is being used to treat medical conditions today, and how it may help you or someone you know.

First off, what is CBD?

As more and more states legalize the use of marijuana, a product known as #CBD oil has spiked in popularity! Cannabidiol—CBD—is a cannabis compound that has significant medical benefits!

Cannabidiol works indirectly with the endocannabinoid system which is a part of the immune system. (We have endocannabinoid receptors in most of our body’s tissues, including a large number in our skin.) It is an anti-inflammatory and is also a powerful antioxidant on its own.

CBD, it is one of the 104 chemical compounds found in the cannabis or marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa, and is considered not psychoactive, unlike THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis that gives you the sensation of getting “high”. Because of its non psychoactive sensations, CBD is an appealing option for those who are looking for some relief from pain and various symptoms without the mind-altering effects of certain pharmaceutical drugs and #marijuana. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from a cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like hemp seed or coconut oil.

Those who are new to #cannabis find CBD to be a great first step! CBD can be vaporized using a pen,  tinctures (sprays or drops), topical balms and rubs, pills and edibles.

What are the health benefits?

Through numerous research, we will break down what we know about CBD and its’ benefits and what it can treat up to this day. Scientific and clinical research shows CBD’s potential as a treatment for a wide range of conditions, including: arthritis, alcoholism, diabetes, MS, PTSD, depression, chronic pain, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and other neurological disorders.

1. Pain Relief:

Recently, scientists and doctors have discovered that certain components of marijuana, including CBD, are responsible for its pain-relieving effects. CBD has demonstrated neurogenic and neuroprotective effects…and…its anti-cancer properties are being researched at several academic research centers across the United States and even across the world. CBD interacts with particular receptors in both the brain and the immune system to significantly reduce inflammation and alleviate the pain. In a study published by the Journal of Experimental Medicine, it has been stated that CBD significantly reduces inflammation in mice and rats…but it’s not only rodents that experience these effects!

“We report that systemic and intrathecal administration of cannabidiol (CBD), a major non psychoactive component of marijuana, and its modified derivatives significantly suppress chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing apparent analgesic tolerance in rodents.” – Journal of Experimental Medicine

2. CBD can reduce Anxiety and Depression:

Anxiety and depression are common mental health disorders that can have devastating impacts on health and well-being. CBD is commonly known to treat physiological symptoms, however, the research of CBD is growing and indicates that it can also be used as a therapy tool for a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression or anxiety.

In a research study conducted by the University of Sao Paulo, “CBD reduces subjective anxiety, leading investigators to conclude that these results suggest that CBD reduces anxiety in [social anxiety disorder] and that this is related to its effects on activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas.” These qualities are linked to CBD’s ability to act on the brain’s receptors for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and social behavior.

3. Cancer Treatment:

There is mounting evidence that CBD could potentially fight and even kill cancer…and at the very least…help ease cancer symptoms along with the side effects of chemotherapy. (Some of those side effects could include vomiting or nausea). CBD, along with other compounds found in marijuana, have an antitumor effect…preventing or inhibiting the formation or growth of tumors. What that means is CBD can amplify the death of tumor cells in both leukemia and colon cancer. Additional research have shown that CBD can also be used to stop the spread of cancer in cervical cancer cells.

The Journal of Experimental Medicine stated “CBD can induce in vitro and vivo inhibition of tumoral cell growth, and we also showed, for the first time, that CBD can trigger the apoptosis of human gliomas, a very aggressive tumor characterized by poop clinical prognosis and unsatisfactory response to currently available pharmacological agents.”

It is important to note that the vast majority of CBD and cancer studies are in fact preclinical which means they are not conducted on human or even animal test subjects. The findings – while promising – should not be construed as conclusive proof that CBD can cure cancer and you need to make sure to talk with a professional when considering CBD as a possible option.

4. Reduced Risk of Diabetes and Obesity:

Several studies have shown that regular cannabis users have a lower body mass index, smaller waist circumferences, and reduced risk of diabetes and obesity. Conscious Lifestyle Magazine stated that “Research has demonstrated that CBD benefits weight loss by helping the body convert white fat into weight-reducing brown fat, promoting noatherogenesisrmal insulin production and sugar metabolism.”

Researchers found that current cannabis users had fasting insulin levels that were up to 16 percent lower than their non-using counterparts, higher levels of HDL cholesterol that protects against diabetes, and 17 percent lower levels of insulin resistance. Respondents who had used cannabis in their lifetime but were not current users showed similar but less pronounced associations, indicating that the protective effect of cannabis fades with time. -Conscious Lifestyle Magazine

All in all, researchers and scientists believe that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD could treat inflammation and therefore improve the body’s overall metabolism unlike insulin and other existing medications for diabetes. CBD may actually suppress, reverse and perhaps cure the disease! And to make things even better…according to ISA Scientific, an Israeli company, your immune system, sugar metabolism, cell growth and heart function also appear to prospectively benefit from CBD anti-inflammatory properties and therefore improve the body’s overall metabolism.

5. Acne:

CBD oil can reduce acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties that may work to reduce the visible inflammation caused by clogged hair follicles or dead skin cells. The oil may also help by taking over the overactive oil production that comes from the skin, which is one of they key causes of acne in most people.

In addition to the anti-inflammatory function, CBD oil may also help treat acne in a number of other ways. One additional benefit of CBD over prescription medications is that the oil ONLY targets the problem-causing cells, leaving the healthy cells alone while reducing common effects to acne medications like irritated or dry skin.

Like many studies, the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD helps lower the production of sebum that leads to acne, partly because of its anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Sebum is an oily substance and with its overproduction, it can cause acne.

The most common and best way to use CBD oil for acne is in a topical form, such as a cream or lotion. Making CBD oil a part of your daily skin care routine may have extensive benefits, to both your acne and other skin issues that you might be having. You can also take CBD oil supplements in pill form to help address any acne or other deeper issues such as inflammation and redness.

CBD oil is also great for acne scars…It can minimize the spread of damaged cells and promote the regeneration of new skin cells. When a wound occurs, like an acne infection, your body’s immune system will begin to produce collagen…which helps produce hypertrophic scarring. The collagen fibers will seal the wound and reduce the risk of infection. In conclusion, CBD oil can help heal wounds in significant ways because it helps by allowing the skin to begin healing but also regulating the production of collagen, allowing the skin to heal in a faster and smoother fashion with less aches and visible scarring.

And that’s a wrap!
